"Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the Lord thy God giveth thee to possess it."

-- Deuteronomy 19:14 (as spoken by the head of the Texas Historical Commission)

Don't Seem Right

Song presented at Sandra Hines' fellowship meeting and published in the Houston International Poetry anthology. For more information on Freedmen's Town, see Fourth Ward Index.

I wuz born in Galveston, went to skewl at Rice.
My Mama's in Texus City, my Daddy's with Jesus Christ.
Now I volunteeer in Freedmen's Town, don't like whut I see:
Kickin' out African po' folk, disruptin' the community.

They desecrated gravesites 'n' built over human remaaains.
The May'r declared how wrawng it wuz, then they wint and did it agin!
Now I ain't no fancy Catholic priest, who know a mortal crime frum a sin,
But I know not to tech a gravesite, where there's dead folk buried in.

Cuz I wuz taught to respect my elders
To let the dead raist in peace
I weren't brought up on Scriptures,
But I know more than the Pharisees,
Who'll kick out bodies left and right,
Whatever them developers please!
You c'n break God's laws fer money,
But it don't seem right to me!

Devil-opers stripped the houses,
Ripped up the streets that the preachers laid,
While Democrats wouldn't do nothin'
Against the folks who pay their way
So we lost the J.D. Hospital
That the children wanted to sa-a-ave
They tore them buildings to the ground
Now they're goin' for the graves!

But I wuz taught to respect my elders
To let the dead raist in peace
I weren't brought up on Scriptures,
But I know more than the Pharisees,
Who'll kick out bodies (dead or alive!)
Whatever them devil-opers please!
You c'n break God's laws fer money,
But it don't seem right to me!

Now I have a sma-a-all confession, I'm a lawless sinner, tew.
I'm the last person on this earth I'd pick to brang God's word to yew.
It's hard to luv yer neighbor like Jesus Christ luv us,
When ya live next door to City Hall, and a gubment you don't trust!

But I wuz taught to respect my elders
To let the dead raist in peace
I weren't brought up on Scriptures,
But I know more than the Pharisees,
Who'll sell their neighbor's civil rights
To the highest biddin' sleaze!
You c'n break God's laws fer money,
But it don't seem right to me!
You c'n break God's laws fer money,
But it don't - seem - right
To me! (No-sir-ee!)
