DARRYL CHERNEY OF EARTH FIRST! is in town with the steelworkers to get people up to date with what's going on with some of the last redwoods being cut down (by MAXXAM corporation) and what's being done to stop this tragedy. He will be appearing with steelworkers who have been picketing the MAXXAM corporation for their exploitation of workers. Please come to the show, it's free, informative, and promises to be a lot of fun! Humorous songs about green & labor issues. Darryl sings about the battle against Houston-based MAXXAM, who looted an S&L to buy and clear cut the redwoods of California.

Also appearing: THE UNITED STEELWORKERS OF AMERICA

The USWA joined the battle against MAXXAM when they went on strike last year in 4 states against MAXXAM's largest subsidiary Kaiser Aluminum. Headwaters Forest activists found strong new allies in the USWA and the two have come together to forge creative new strategies to take on the corporate greed of Houston's own pariah, Charles Hurwitz, CEO of MAXXAM.

Come meet these fine people who have traveled cross-country to picket daily at MAXXAM and Charles Hurwitz's home at the Houstonian. Don't miss this chance! Environmentally Sound Promotions / PO Box 2254 / Redway, CA 95560 www.jailhurwitz.com

Also here are the details on rallies happening next week at the belly of the beast i.e., Maxxam's hometown of Houston. Come out on Tuesday and maybe glimpse a rare species of government workers who are actually doing something good for once, witness the Columbo-like prosecutors tear holes through Maxxam's BS, and be outside to show your support.

On Wednesday be one of the few who have ever brought concern to politically devoid and soul-less sold-out Houston, maybe we can catch some Mardi Gras spirit. Also, this may be a once in a long time chance to annoy former president Bush, as Hurwitz hides out at the same condos. Give us a call at 478-7666 for ride coordination.

    TWO RALLIES AGAINST MAXXAM

    * Tuesday, February 16, 12 Noon FEDERAL COURTHOUSE (site of MAXXAM's ongoing S&L trial) 515 Rusk (Opposite Tranquillity Park)

    * Wednesday, February 17, 12 Noon Walk from MAXXAM to Hurwitz's House at 5847 San Felipe (@ Augusta). Walk at 3 pm to Houstonian (2.5 mi.) 121 Post Oak La. (shuttle back)

TURN UP THE HEAT ON CHARLES HURWITZ:

Hurwitz and MAXXAM are on trial for the largest Savings and Loan crash in Texas. They looted United Savings Association of Texas and taxpayers paid the $1.6 billion bailout. Hurwitz used his ill-gotten gains to takeover both the ancient redwoods of Pacific Lumber and Kaiser Aluminum. Both companies once treated their employees well. Now, Hurwitz keeps both in massive debt for his personal gain. Steelworkers have been on strike against MAXXAM's Kaiser Aluminum four months for decent pay, pension fund, job security and against unfair labor practices. Environmentalists have been protesting Hurwitz for 12 years over clear cutting ancient redwoods, looting the working pension, & violations of federal statutes.

UNIONS AND ENVIRONMENTALISTS ARE BUILDING BRIDGES TOGETHER TO FIGHT CORPORATE GREED.

    Headwaters Forest needs your help!

Headwaters Forest is one of the last major stands of unprotected old-growth redwoods in the world. Located in northwest California near the Pacific coast in Humboldt County, Headwaters has been the focus of environmental activists for a decade since it was discovered to be important habitat for several listed endangered species, including the Marbled Murrelet, Coho Salmon, and Spotted Owl. It is one of the most amazing forests left on Earth, with trees that have lived for thousand of years. These trees influence the weather patterns by transpiring water into the air and creating fog that in turn influences the amount of fair weather in other parts of the country. Yet Headwaters is still being logged at an unprecedented rate, causing irreversible damage to this complex ecosystem. Your immediate action is needed to save this amazing place.
